Moving into a new home can be an exciting experience. However, unless you’re moving into a newly constructed home, there are likely going to be some things you’ll need to repair upon moving in. Being prepared for minor repairs will help you adjust to your new home quickly.
Minor Issues You May Need to Repair in a New Home: Weatherstripping
Weatherstrip is the material that you place around door or window frames to seal them tight. Over the years, this weatherstripping can get worn down and broken which often results in draftiness, occasional leaks when it rains, and even bugs getting into your home.
Make sure you carefully inspect your windows and doors throughout the new house when you move in to make sure the weatherstripping looks good.
Wall Damage
When you move into a home that has been lived in by another family or individual, there will likely be some normal wear and tear. As you notice areas where there is wall damage, figure out what kind of repairs you need. For small holes from hanging things on the wall, you can usually just use some spackle to fill the hole.
For large holes, you’ll need to use drywall. Drywall can cost $2.12 per square foot to have installed. Typically, you want to buy a square piece of drywall bigger than the hole, place the piece over the hole, and trace around it. Then, you’ll cut along those lines, insert the drywall, and cover the patch.
Minor Issues You May Need to Repair in a New Home: Repainting
When you move into a new home, especially if it is a family house, it’s likely that there may be a few rooms that you need to repaint. This is especially likely if one of the children’s rooms was painted a particular color that doesn’t fit your or your child’s tastes.
Painting a room doesn’t have to be a super overwhelming project though. You can do it yourself or hire professional painters. Before you decide to paint the room a new color, do a test patch on part of the wall and observe it at different times of day to ensure that it is the color you want.
Being prepared to address some of these particular issues like repainting or weatherstripping is incredibly important for your new home to be move-in ready. But be prepared for other issues as well. You may find that it might be best to have some repairs performed by professionals rather than yourself. Doing this will not only ensure the job is done right but will also save you some hassle.
