Lee County looking to add boat ramp to North Fort Myers

Tuesday, 4/17/2018, The Lee County Commissioners passed a measure that would allow negotiations to start with the property owner to secure the lot.

The property located on North Tamiami Road (Business 41) costs $1.3 million, but the county could also expand and build a park that would cost in total close to $4 million.

Many in the North Fort Myers community feel there is a need for Lee County to add a boat ramp to North Fort Myers. This is the same area that the Lee County Board of County Commissioners last week officially ratified a pilot program that will incentivize economic development in North Fort Myers, an area that has lagged behind the rest of Lee County in regards to the economic recovery. The BOCC voted 5-0 to approve a $2 million pilot project intended to encourage new commercial, office and industrial development and redevelopment of obsolete buildings in an effort to create jobs in the area.

These assets are also located in the target area of the recent North Fort Myers Market Assessment.

Lee County hired a Consultant to conduct a market assessment for commercial and mixed-use development in North Fort Myers.

The target area is well situated with access to the river and to transportation making it ideal for revitalization efforts.  As with many other older communities, a number of the commercial businesses have struggled and now sit vacant. Large parking lots and older housing subdivisions are also predominant community features.

The Lee Plan (Lee County Comprehensive Plan) designates this area as Intensive on the Future Land Use Map and promotes the future growth as a “destination for living, shopping, working and socializing.”   The land has conventional commercial and residential zoning. Click here for more information
